AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome)

AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV attacks and weakens the immune system, leaving the body vulnerable to infections and diseases that would normally be fought off easily.


A person can become infected with HIV through contact with infected blood, semen, vaginal fluids, or breast milk. The virus can be transmitted through unprotected sexual activity, sharing of needles or syringes, mother-to-child transmission during childbirth or breastfeeding, or blood transfusions or organ transplants from infected donors (although this is very rare in developed countries where donated blood and organs are screened for HIV).


The symptoms of AIDS can vary, but typically include fever, fatigue,
